Laugh of Privilege

This map guided the audience through the Bethanien centre during the festival to 6 stations where the soundtrack of different locales looped through headphones. Every so often, the ambient sounds of the city are interjected by sounds that may cause uneasy feelings, sounds and laughter of people taking more space than is necessary to be comfortable in this world, thereby making others feel less so. I was interested in the idea of how sounds can occupy and overtake public space, reinforcing a privileged status. Artist Statement

I set out to record these sounds that bother me in my everyday life. Sounds that I first started calling the ‘laugh of privilege,’ because of the kind of laughter that I would hear often that sounded like mocking, smugness, superiority, entitlement, etc. The kind of laughter that usually comes with insults, in an assertion for dominance and reinforcement of privilege. It wasn’t as easy as I had thought to get recordings of these sounds, because they often happen very quickly and without warning. I used various methods of gathering the recordings, which resulted in very different responses. So the concept expanded to include other sounds that either assert, reaffirm or disrupt privilege.
Ich begann diese Projekt mit dem Ziel, diese störenden alltaglichen Geräusche aufzunehmen. Diese Geräusche nannte ich “laugh of privilege,” weil sie oft wie Verspottung, Spießigkeit, Superiorität, Anspruch, usw. klingen. Diese spezifische Art des Gelächters kommt üblicherweise mit Beleidigungen, die Dominanz zeigen, und Privilegen verfestigen. Es war nicht so einfach, wie ich dachte, diese Geräusche aufzunehmen. Sie erklingen oft sehr schnell ohne Warnung. Ich habe verschiedene Methoden der Tonaufnahme benutzt, und die Ergebnisse waren auch sehr unterschiedlich. Deshalb erweiterte ich das Konzept. Ich bezog andere Klänge ein, die auf Privileg wirken, entweder festzustellen, zu behaupten, oder zu unterbrechen.

I took a long walk through Vancouver’s Gastown area with my recorder hiding in my pocket, a neighbourhood of decadent nightlife on the border of one of the poorest in Canada.
Ich spazierte lange durch das Vancouver Gastown Gebiet mit meiner Aufnahmegerät heimlich in meiner Jackentasche. Dieses ausschweifende Party-Gebiet ist an der Grenze zu ein von der armsten Nachbarschaften in Kanada.

But I walked along Oranienstraße with headphones on and my big stereo mic clearly visible, attracting attention from those who wanted to disrupt.
Aber ich spazierte Oranienstraße mit ziemlichen größen Kopförern entlang und mein größ Mikrofon war total Sichtbar. Die die unterbrechen wollte konnten.

I sat with my mic hidden in my bag during the French-German Soccer game playing at a bar on Wiener Straße, accidentally recording the sounds of two bombs exploding in Paris as I attempted to record the sounds of some guys laughing in the bar.
Ich saß mit meinem versteckten Mikrofon während des Fußball Spiels zwischen Frankreich und Deutschland in einer Bar in der Wiener Straße. Ich nahm die Geräusche der zwei Bomben in Paris unbeabsichtig auf, während meines Versuch die Geräusche der lachenden Männer in der Bar aufzunehmen.

And hidden in a toilet stall, I used my phone to record a conversation in the ladies bathroom at a tourist bar in Mitte.
Und ich versteckte mich in einer Damentoilette in einer Touristen-Bar in Mitte, um mit meinem Handy ein Unterhaltung aufzunehmen.

I also recorded with my phone a spontaneous confrontation with some guys I had just seen pissing in the bushes in broad daylight at a highway rest stop in northern Germany. I told them I was recording sounds for this project and asked them to participate.
Ich habe auch mit meinem Handy ein spontanes Vorgehen mit einigen Typen aufgenommen. Ich habe sie gerade gesehen, am hellechten Tag an einer Nord-deutschen Autobahnraststätte in die Büsche pinkelten. Ich erklärte ihnen, dass ich Töne für diese Projekt aufnehmen werde und fragte sie, ob sie teilnehmen wollten.

My phone was also used to record the sounds of a bunch of teenagers on a train near Dresden.
Mein Handy war auch benutzt, um Töne eine Gruppe Teenager in einem Zug durch Dresden aufzunehmen.
